Carpenter is a former columnist for The Indianapolis Star and the author of two books of observations and opinions from his long journalism career, “Hard Pieces” and “Indiana Out Loud.”  He’s also a writer of short stories and poetry and has published a collection of poems titled “More Than I Could See.”  Dan is an Indianapolis native who grew up in the Fountain Square area and has lived many years with his wife, Mary, a retired Indianapolis Public Schools teacher, in the Butler-Tarkington neighborhood. A graduate of Marquette University in Milwaukee, he was most valuably educated the wholesale way—by his early stint with the black community newspaper The Milwaukee Courier, and by parenthood.
